Inspired by his mother's blindness, he has dedicated his career to advancing care for diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and complex retinal detachments, bringing both technical expertise and profound empathy to every patient interaction. Dr. Fernandes completed his undergraduate education with honors at Tulane University before earning his medical degree at George Washington University School of Medicine, where he discovered his passion for ophthalmology. He rose to Chief Resident at the University of Chicago during his ophthalmology residency and completed an intensive two-year vitreoretinal fellowship at Northwestern University. His exceptional academic achievements include selection as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Scholar, for which he spent a year conducting research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. This board-certified specialist couples advanced vitreoretinal fellowship training with advanced technical skill and a deep sense of empathy rooted in his lifelong work with the blind.
